For a business with a physical location in Pakistan, the Google Business Profile is usually worth more than the website, and it is almost always the thing nobody has touched in two years. Local search is where “restaurant near me”, “dentist in Bahria Town” and “software house in Rawalpindi” get resolved, and the profile decides whether you appear.
Here is what actually moves local rankings, in the order the effort is worth spending.
How the local pack is decided
Google ranks the three-result map pack on three factors, and it is worth knowing which of them you can influence.
- Relevance. How well your profile matches the query. Fully within your control.
- Distance. How far you are from the searcher. Not within your control at all.
- Prominence: how established your business appears: reviews, citations, mentions, website authority. Within your control, slowly.
Distance is why a business cannot rank across a whole city from one location, and why “why am I not ranking in Lahore” from a Karachi address has no fix. Everything below is relevance and prominence.
The things that matter most
1. Primary category, chosen precisely
The single highest-impact field on the entire profile, and the one most often set carelessly at signup and never revisited.
Your primary category should be the most specific one that describes your main service. “Software Company” and “Website Designer” compete for different searches. Add secondary categories for genuine additional services, but the primary one carries most of the weight: choose it for the query you most want to win, not for the broadest description of your business.
2. Reviews, with a working system behind them
The strongest prominence signal you can influence, and the one where local businesses lose most consistently. Volume, recency and rating all count. Twenty reviews from this year outperform sixty from 2021.
What works: a short link sent by WhatsApp immediately after a good interaction. Not a QR code on a wall, not “please review us” in an email footer. Ask at the moment of satisfaction, make it one tap, and make asking somebody’s job rather than everybody’s intention.
Reply to every review, including the bad ones. Replies are a ranking-relevant activity signal and, more practically, the reply is read by every future customer who sees the complaint. A calm, specific response to a one-star review converts more people than the review costs you.
Do not buy reviews. Detection has improved considerably and profile suspension is a genuine risk for a business whose enquiries depend on it.
3. NAP consistency
Name, address and phone number, written identically everywhere they appear: your website, Facebook, directories, listings.
“Office 4, 2nd Floor, Rehmat Plaza” and “Suite 4, Second Floor, Rehmat Plaza” are different strings to a search engine and dilute the signal that these listings describe the same business. Pick one exact format, write it down, and use only that. In Pakistan this is unusually messy because addresses are inconsistently formatted everywhere, which also means fixing it is a real advantage.
4. Photos, added regularly
Profiles with recent photos get materially more engagement, and engagement feeds prominence. Exterior shots so people can find the door, interior shots so they know what to expect, team, work in progress, finished results.
The frequency matters more than the production quality. Four decent phone photos a month beats a professional shoot uploaded once in 2023.
5. Services and description, written for how people search
Populate every service you offer as a separate entry with its own description. This is free relevance and most profiles leave it empty.
The business description should read naturally and include the terms customers actually use. Including the city and area names. “Software house in Rawalpindi building ERP, POS and custom web systems” beats a paragraph of adjectives about passion and excellence.
6. Hours that are true, including holidays
Underrated. Google surfaces “open now” filters, and a customer who arrives at a closed business leaves a one-star review that costs more than a week of optimisation gained. Set special hours for Eid and public holidays in advance.
The second tier, once the above is done
- Google Posts. Weekly updates, offers, and announcements. Modest direct ranking effect, real effect on how much space your listing occupies for a branded search.
- Q&A. You may ask and answer your own questions. Seed the five questions customers actually ask. Left unattended, this section fills with wrong answers from strangers.
- Local citations. Consistent listings on Pakistani directories and relevant industry sites. Steady prominence value, and low effort once your NAP format is fixed.
- Location pages on your website. If you have multiple branches, each needs its own page with its own address, embedded map, hours and locally relevant content, not one contact page listing four addresses.
- Messaging. Enable it only if someone will genuinely answer within the hour. A slow reply is worse than no messaging button.
What wastes time
- Keyword-stuffing your business name. “Best Software House Rawalpindi Web Design SEO” is against the guidelines, reportable by competitors, and a fast route to suspension.
- Buying citations in bulk. Hundreds of listings on irrelevant directories does approximately nothing. Ten relevant, accurate ones do more.
- Fake locations. Virtual offices and home addresses used to fake city coverage get removed, and the removal takes the real listing’s credibility with it.
- Obsessing over one keyword’s position. Local rankings vary by the searcher’s exact location. Measure calls, direction requests and profile views instead. Those are the numbers that correspond to revenue.
What to measure
The profile’s own insights give you the only metrics that matter here: how many people found you through search versus maps, how many called, how many requested directions, how many clicked through to the website. Track those monthly.
Ranking position is a proxy. Calls are the outcome. A profile whose position did not move but whose calls doubled had a very good quarter.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to rank in the local pack?
Two to six months for a profile that has been properly optimised and is accumulating reviews steadily. Faster in low-competition categories, considerably slower in saturated ones like restaurants or property in major cities.
How many Google reviews do I need?
There is no threshold. What matters is being competitive with the businesses currently ranking for your terms: check them, and aim past their count while keeping a steady flow rather than a burst.
Can I rank without a physical address?
Service-area businesses can register without displaying an address, but you still need a genuine service area and a verifiable business. Fabricated addresses are removed, and the removal damages the legitimate listing too.
Does my website affect Google Business Profile rankings?
Yes. Website authority and relevance feed the prominence factor. A profile linked to a fast, well-structured site with genuine local content outperforms an identical profile linked to a neglected one.
