Industrial Projects for Students: Turn a Real Company Problem into Your FYP

Industrial projects for students are final year projects built on a real organisation’s problem, with its users, its data and usually a mentor from the company alongside your university supervisor. They take more organising than a self-chosen topic, but they prove your work survived contact with a real business.

What is an industry-based project?

In an industry-based project the problem comes from outside the university. A software house, clinic, school or factory describes something that costs it time or money, and your group builds and tests a solution with people who will use it. It still follows your department’s FYP rules: proposal, documentation, testing and defense.

Academic FYP Industrial project
Problem comes from The group or supervisor A real organisation
Users Classmates or imagined personas Real staff or customers
Data Public datasets or made-up records The organisation’s data, usually anonymised
Supervision University supervisor University supervisor plus an industry mentor
Hardest part Finding a problem worth solving Access, NDAs and changing requirements
What you can show A demo A demo plus feedback from real users

Why industrial projects for students are worth the effort

What you get

  • A problem statement nobody can call invented, which makes the proposal defense easier.
  • Real requirements and constraints to write about in your documentation.
  • A reference from the company and a project you can explain in any interview.
  • Sometimes an internship or job offer from the same company.

What the company gets

  • A working prototype for a problem it had not got round to.
  • An early look at graduates before it hires.
  • A link with a university for future internships.

Universities are being pushed the same way. In September 2025 HEC announced that all undergraduate programmes will require at least three credit hours of supervised internship, and encouraged universities to build formal partnerships with companies, SMEs and public sector organisations for student placements.

Where to find industrial projects for students

  1. Start in your 6th semester. Companies take weeks to agree, and the proposal deadline will not move.
  2. Ask your department first. The FYP coordinator, career office or ORIC may already have MoU partner companies that want student projects.
  3. Use alumni. Seniors in software houses know which internal problems suit an FYP and who can approve them.
  4. Approach businesses directly. Clinics, schools, shops, distributors and factories near campus often run a process on paper or spreadsheets.
  5. Turn an internship into a project. Ask your internship manager whether a problem you saw there can become your FYP. Our guide to getting an internship in a software house covers that first step.
  6. Match the problem to your skills. Turn down anything your group cannot finish in two semesters, however impressive the company.

Email template to request an industry problem

Send it to a named person rather than a general inbox, and keep it short.

Email to a company
Subject: Final year project request: [University], [Department]

Dear [Name],

We are [number] final-year [BS Computer Science / Software Engineering] students at [University], supervised by [Supervisor name, designation]. Our final year project runs from [month, year] to [month, year].

We would like to build it around a real problem in your organisation. We work in [web / mobile / data / AI / IoT], and could, for example, [one or two ideas relevant to their business].

What we would ask:
- One meeting to understand the problem
- A contact person for a short check-in every two weeks
- Sample or anonymised data, if the project needs it

What you would get:
- A working prototype, documentation and a handover session
- An NDA signed by the group if you need one, agreed with our supervisor

Could we meet for 20 minutes in the next two weeks? Our supervisor is copied.

Regards,
[Name], on behalf of the group

IP, NDAs and data: agree it in writing

Most disputes start because nobody wrote down what could be shared. Before you write code, agree these points by email, with your supervisor copied:

  • Ownership: who owns the code, and can the group show it in portfolios?
  • The report: departments usually keep a copy and run similarity checks. Agree which details, screenshots and figures can appear.
  • The demo: can you show it at the defense, at competitions, on GitHub or in your CV?
  • Data: use anonymised or synthetic data where possible. Never copy customer names, CNIC numbers or medical records onto personal laptops.
  • The NDA: show it to your supervisor before signing. An NDA that stops examiners seeing your work is a problem for your degree.

Dual supervision and how you are evaluated

Industrial projects usually have two supervisors: your university supervisor owns the academic side and the grade, and the industry mentor owns the problem and requirements. Agree early who signs off each milestone.

Evaluation usually stays with the department’s FYP committee, through the same proposal, mid and final defenses as everyone else. Some departments invite the mentor or ask for a feedback letter, so check your FYP handbook. Expect questions on what you built versus what the company already had; our FYP viva questions guide helps.

Industrial training vs internship vs industrial project

Students and departments use these terms loosely. This is how they usually differ; your department’s handbook decides.

Industrial training Internship Industrial project
What it is A supervised placement in a company or plant; a term engineering departments often use Work experience in an organisation, for credit or not Your FYP, built on a company’s problem
When Usually a summer break before final year Any time; many programmes require one 7th and 8th semester
You produce A training report and a company letter An internship report and certificate A working system, FYP report and defense
Assessed by Department, often with a company form Department and host organisation FYP committee, with mentor input

With HEC’s three-credit-hour internship requirement, many students will do an internship and an industrial project at different points in the degree. Our internship report format covers the internship side.

Where Ezitech fits

Two things Ezitech runs sit close to industrial projects:

  • Internship programme: three months on one track, onsite in Rawalpindi or remote, where interns work on live client briefs and a named mentor reviews their work every week. The fee and refund policy are explained on our fee page.
  • University partnerships: MoUs with NUML and Ibadat International University in Islamabad and with three software houses, plus free campus seminars and on-campus FYP evaluation, where standout students are offered internships and roles. See our partners and collaborations page.

Industrial project questions

What is an industry-based final year project?

A final year project built on a real organisation’s problem, usually with its data and an industry mentor alongside your university supervisor. It follows your department’s normal FYP rules.

Is industrial training the same as an internship?

The terms overlap. Industrial training usually means a supervised placement that many engineering departments require, while internship is the broader term; your department’s handbook defines what counts.

Do I need my supervisor’s approval for an industrial project?

Yes. The supervisor and FYP committee approve the proposal as for any FYP, and should see any NDA before you sign it.

Can I use company data in my FYP report?

Only what the company agrees to in writing. Use anonymised or synthetic data where possible, and agree which screenshots and figures can appear.

What if the company stops responding halfway?

Keep the scope achievable with sample data so you can finish without them, and record every agreed requirement by email so you can show the committee what changed.

Which industrial project is good for computer science students?

One with users you can reach and data you can get: POS, clinic booking, inventory, OCR and chatbots are common starting points. Pick what your group can finish and defend.
