AI and machine learning engineers in Pakistan typically start at about Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 a month, and senior roles are advertised at Rs 250,000 to Rs 450,000 a month. Published averages for the role range from about Rs 70,000 to Rs 184,000 a month, depending on which salary platform you look at.
Below are the figures by experience, what each salary platform reports and why they disagree, the city differences, how AI engineers compare with data scientists, and what actually moves pay up.
Salary platforms have small samples for this role in Pakistan, between 28 and 35 reported salaries each. Treat every figure here as a range, not a promise, and check the sources listed at the end.
AI engineer salary by experience
| Level | Typical monthly pay | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Intern | Varies widely, often unpaid or fee based | Stipends depend on the company. See paid vs free internships. |
| Fresher, under 1 year | Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 | Job ads on Rozee.pk and Mustakbil, 2025 and 2026, plus a PayScale entry-level average of about Rs 52,000 (8 profiles) |
| Early career, 1 to 4 years | About Rs 75,000 | PayScale early career average of Rs 900,000 a year |
| Mid level, 2 to 5 years | No reliable figure | Too few reported salaries to quote honestly |
| Senior, 5 years or more | Rs 250,000 to Rs 450,000 advertised | Senior machine learning and AI job ads in Islamabad and Lahore, 2026 |
The jump from early career to senior is large because senior AI roles usually mean shipping and running models in production, not only training them. Companies pay for the person who can keep a model working with real users and real data.
What the salary platforms say
| Platform | Average per month | Range | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indeed Pakistan | Rs 184,101 | Rs 65,235 to Rs 519,555 | Machine learning engineer, 35 salaries from job posts, updated 17 September 2026 |
| Paylab | Rs 136,990 | Rs 52,420 to Rs 310,421 | AI engineer, survey based, sample size not shown |
| PayScale | About Rs 70,000 | Rs 840,000 a year average base | Machine learning engineer, 28 self-reported profiles, updated October 2025 |
The gap between these numbers is mostly about method. Indeed counts salaries from job posts, and companies that publish pay for AI roles tend to be hiring experienced people. PayScale relies on people reporting their own base pay, which pulls in more juniors. With samples this small, a handful of high or low salaries moves the average a lot.
If you want one sensible way to read them: freshers should expect the lower end, and someone with two or three years of real project work can reasonably aim for the middle of the Indeed range.
AI engineer salary by city
Indeed’s job-post data shows these city averages for machine learning engineers. It does not show how many salaries each city is based on, so treat the differences as indicative.
| City | Average per month (Indeed) |
|---|---|
| Islamabad | Rs 295,874 |
| Rawalpindi | Rs 141,511 |
| Lahore | Rs 131,586 |
| Karachi | Rs 71,507 |
Islamabad has a number of AI companies and global engineering teams, and with a small sample a few well-paid job posts are enough to lift a city average. Do not read Rs 295,874 as a typical Islamabad salary. For who is hiring, see AI companies in Pakistan.
AI engineer vs data scientist salary
On PayScale, which uses the same self-reported method for both roles, the two pay almost the same:
- Machine learning engineer: Rs 840,000 a year average base, about Rs 70,000 a month (28 profiles).
- Data scientist: Rs 860,000 a year, about Rs 71,700 a month (77 profiles, June 2026). Entry level averages Rs 679,412 a year and early career Rs 1,166,528 a year.
In practice the titles overlap heavily in Pakistan. Roles that involve deploying models, building LLM applications and running them in production tend to be advertised at higher pay than analysis-focused data science roles, but no published survey measures that premium reliably. Remote work for foreign companies
Pakistani AI engineers working remotely for foreign companies are paid in dollars, and senior remote roles can pay several times a local salary. Advertised figures vary too much, and samples are too small, to quote a reliable range. If you aim for remote work, a public portfolio of deployed projects and strong written English matter more than any certificate. See how to get a remote job from Pakistan.
What raises an AI engineer’s pay
- Models that run in production. Deployment, monitoring and fixing a model when the data changes are what separate a junior from a senior.
- LLM application skills. Retrieval, prompt and evaluation design, and building AI features into real products are in demand.
- Strong Python and SQL. Most AI work is data work. Weak data skills cap pay early.
- A portfolio with real users. One deployed project people actually use beats five notebook demos.
- Clear English. Client-facing and remote roles pay more, and they need written and spoken communication.
- Changing employers at the right time. PayScale notes that switching companies is one of the common ways pay increases in this role.
How to start a career as an AI engineer
Most AI engineers in Pakistan start from a CS, SE or data background, learn machine learning on top, and get their first role after an internship or a strong final year project. A practical path:
- Follow the AI engineer roadmap and the machine learning roadmap.
- Build one or two deployed projects. AI-focused FYP ideas are a good place to start.
- Get supervised experience through an internship. Ezitech runs AI internships, including machine learning, deep learning and computer vision tracks, onsite in Rawalpindi or remote.
- If you prefer to learn in Roman Urdu first, there is an online AI course in Roman Urdu.
AI engineer salary questions
What is the salary of an AI engineer in Pakistan per month?
Published averages range from about Rs 70,000 (PayScale) to Rs 137,000 (Paylab) and Rs 184,000 (Indeed) a month. Freshers usually start around Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000, and senior roles are advertised at Rs 250,000 to Rs 450,000.
What does a fresher AI engineer earn in Pakistan?
Most entry-level AI and machine learning job ads we reviewed offered Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 a month, and PayScale’s entry-level average is about Rs 52,000. A strong portfolio or internship can put a fresher above that range.
Which city pays AI engineers the most in Pakistan?
On Indeed’s job-post data, Islamabad has the highest average for machine learning engineers, followed by Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi. City samples are small, so treat the gaps as indicative.
Do AI engineers earn more than data scientists in Pakistan?
On PayScale’s self-reported data the averages are almost the same, about Rs 70,000 a month for machine learning engineers and Rs 71,700 for data scientists. Roles focused on deploying models and LLM applications tend to be advertised higher.
Is AI engineering a good career in Pakistan?
It pays well at senior level, and both local companies and foreign employers hire for it. Entry is competitive, so the people who do best are those with deployed projects and supervised experience, not only courses.
